Facebook Business Page Development
Written on Sunday 11th of April, 2010
My basic aim when I started designing websites was to be able to continually learn different things whilst doing a job I enjoy. Starting from scratch and knowing nothing of website design and development, this was easy to begin with.
Three years on this has become a little more difficult, but when someone asked me what I know about FBML I had to reply that I knew as much about it as I know of the inner working of a womans mind. For those that don't know, FBML is the HTML of Facebook and, although similar, has some unique tags from standard HTML.
All in all, FBML seems quite advanced. There are some nice shortcut tags to help with standard javascript and AJAX and on the whole is a nice way to write code. They have a very good wiki page on it all and explains everything pretty well. They even give some examples, although they can be confusing when you first take a look.
So, this week I took on the challenge of learning enough FBML to write a multi tab Business Page for a golf course in Villaricos, Spain. This was a sub-contract job for a friend who prefers to design sites graphically, while I prefer coding. The easiest way to put the code into the rather small FBML box is to write the code in your standard editor and then copy/paste to the FBML box. Being me, this didn't occur to me until I'd finished working on the project, but it's a learning curve. If you want to check out my working environment (the finished profile won't go live until next week), take a look at The Bar Trabalon Facebook Page.
The work has given me great satisfaction as it has worked out so well and means that I can now add that to the list of projects I'm able to work on.
